When the weather gets warmer, you may be inspired to dust off the shelves, declutter your cabinets and air out your linens. While taking the time to tidy your space can bring you some peace of mind, it’s also a great time to consider organizing your finances as well! A few small steps can leave you feeling more in control of your saving and spending.
- Go paperless – Streamline your records and opt for paperless notifications. This can be for your banking, credit cards, brokerage accounts, loans, bills and dining receipts. This will minimize physical clutter, reducing stacks of envelopes and paper, while also making it easier to track your finances digitally. It’s also more ecofriendly!
- Automate payments – Set up automated payments to ease some of your mental load for your High-Yield Savings Account, Roth IRA or monthly bills.
- Cancel unused subscriptions – There are subscription services for everything these days, from media streaming to meal kits to shaving razors! Check your credit card statement for monthly charges, then take some time to evaluate if there are any services that maybe you aren’t using to their full potential (if at all!) that you could get by without. By cancelling just one or two subscriptions, this could add up to hundreds of dollars each year to spend or save.
- Check your credit report – Examine your credit report annually to identify any inaccuracies, as well as to know what your credit score is. Your credit details are compiled by three major credit reporting agencies: TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax. If you’d like to set up an ongoing monitoring routine, consider reviewing one report from each agency every four months.
- Consider your 401(k) contributions – Review your 401(k) contributions, especially in periods of market volatility. A key benefit of a 401(k) is that you have control over the amount you contribute, as well as the investment mix of funds that your money is contributed towards. Verify that you meet HPE’s employer match of 100% of the first 4% that you contribute, then visit NetBenefits® to evaluate whether you’d like to change your contribution or review or change your investments.
- “Bucket” your savings – Create or review your budget and set up different accounts, or “buckets,” for each of your savings goals, like a vacation, a new piece of furniture, or an emergency savings fund. This will help give you a clear picture of how much money you have and may motivate you to save even more.
